Sun Plaza sits right on top of Sembawang MRT, so most people end up here because it’s convenient, not because they planned it. Fair enough. The mall runs across a few floors of food — hot pot, zi char, fast food, bakeries, and a basement full of quick bites. This guide is the short version: what’s worth your time, and where we are if you want Taiwan street food.
Where is Sun Plaza, and how do you get there?
Sun Plaza is at 30 Sembawang Drive, Singapore 757713. It’s directly connected to Sembawang MRT (NS11) via Exit B — you walk out of the gantry and you’re basically in the mall. No crossing, no weather drama. There’s also Sembawang Public Library and an NTUC FairPrice inside, which is why the place is always busier than you’d expect for the north.
If you’re driving, there’s parking on site. If you’re coming from Yishun or Canberra, it’s one or two stops down the North-South line.
What’s the food scene like at Sun Plaza?
Broad, honestly. It’s a heartland mall, so it covers the full range rather than chasing one trend:
- Big sit-down meals — Haidilao is here if you’ve got two hours and a group. White Restaurant does the white bee hoon that Sembawang people will argue about.
- Fast and familiar — KFC, McDonald’s, Sushi Express, BreadTalk, Starbucks. The stuff you order when the kids are melting down.
- Snacks and takeaway — the basement is where the quick stuff lives. Bengawan Solo, Fragrance for bak kwa, and us.
So the real question isn’t “is there food at Sun Plaza.” It’s what you want in the next fifteen minutes.
Taiwan street food at Sun Plaza — I Love Taimei, #B1-35

I Love Taimei has been around since 2009 — women-owned, co-run by Phoebe and Yadah, now 14 outlets island-wide. The whole thing is built off Taiwan’s night markets, Shilin and Raohe specifically, which is why the menu looks like a stall lineup rather than a restaurant menu.
The chicken — all four are $6.90:
- Original Chicken — plain, lets the marinade do the talking. Start here if it’s your first time.
- Extra Crispy Chicken — thicker batter, more crunch.
- BBQ Chicken — glazed, sweet-savoury, no chilli heat.
- Taiwan Popcorn Chicken (鹽酥雞) — bite-sized and easy to share. Basil goes into the oil, so you get that green, slightly aniseed smell coming off the bag before you’ve even opened it. That smell is the night market bit.
We use chicken thigh, not breast. It costs more and it’s the reason the meat stays tender after a hard fry — breast dries out, thigh doesn’t. Everything is marinated before it goes in, and it’s fried fresh when you order, so give it a few minutes.
The drinks — Brown Sugar Milk Tea is $3.90 (M) / $4.90 (L) and it’s the pairing that works with fried chicken; the sugar cuts the salt. 1988 Milk Tea, our house blend, is $4.50 (M) / $5.50 (L).
If you want a proper meal, there’s the Braised Chicken Rice Set — Taiwan’s lu rou fan, except we do it with chicken.
One thing worth saying plainly: I Love Taimei is not halal certified. But all our food is prepared with no pork and no lard, and we don’t serve beef either. Can you pair Sun Plaza with something to do nearby?
Yes, and this is the underrated one: Sembawang Hot Spring Park, along Gambas Avenue. It’s Singapore’s only natural hot spring you can actually walk into, entry is free, and there’s a cascading foot bath plus an egg-cooking station where the water comes out at around 70°C. Bring your own eggs and a pail — they don’t provide them.
Practical notes, from NParks, who run the park:
- Open 7am to 7pm. You’ll see “open till midnight” floating around on travel sites — that’s outdated. Go by NParks.
- The foot bath pool closes Mondays and Thursdays, 11am–2pm for cleaning.
- No carpark on site. Nearest is 114 Yishun Ring Road, about 450m away — call it an 8-minute walk.
- Nearest MRT is Canberra, one stop from Sembawang.
Shade is limited and the water is genuinely hot, so mornings are kinder than midday, especially with small kids. The obvious loop: hot spring in the morning, one MRT stop back to Sembawang, then eat. Your feet will have earned it.
