Children’s Day 2026 lands on Friday, 2 October. Most parents have already paid for something — a theme park, an indoor playground, tickets to a show. Here’s the thing: the biggest kids’ event in town that day doesn’t cost a cent. Octoburst! at the Esplanade is free, it runs all day, and it’s a short MRT ride from a plate of Taiwan fried chicken.
What’s actually on at Octoburst! 2026?
Octoburst! is the Esplanade’s children’s festival. The main festival day is Friday, 2 October 2026, and admission is free — that’s straight from the Esplanade’s own listing, not a rumour going round the parent chats.
This year’s theme is Stories. There are nine free programmes on the 2nd, several of them running at more than one timeslot, so you’re not locked into a single mad dash. Two new commissions anchor it — Dear Story Keeper and The Story Keeper’s Room — where kids get invited to write on the floor, which is either your child’s dream or your personal nightmare. There’s also a children’s choir, a craft workshop making mood flowers, sports-day-style games, and a dance party. One strand, A Universe In Sounds, carries on through Saturday and Sunday, 3–4 October, if Friday doesn’t work.
Practical bits, because that’s what actually decides your morning:
- Where: Esplanade – Theatres on the Bay, 1 Esplanade Drive, Singapore 038981.
- Cost: free.
- Getting there: City Hall and Esplanade MRT are both close. From City Hall, it’s roughly a 10–15 minute walk — longer with a stroller — and the Esplanade notes the route is sheltered, so a downpour won’t wreck you. From Esplanade station on the Circle Line it’s nearer, about 7–10 minutes.
- Timings: individual programme times are published on the Esplanade’s Octoburst! page and some slots fill up. Check the day before, not on the morning.
We’re not involved in the festival and we’re not telling you we are — it’s the Esplanade’s event, and we just think it’s the best-value thing happening that day.
Where do you eat after?
This is where these outings usually fall apart. You’ve spent four hours on your feet, everyone’s hungry at the same time, and the queue at the nearest food hall is forty deep.
Skip it. Get back on the train at City Hall and go one stop east on the East-West line to Bugis. Our Bugis Junction outlet is at #B1-K11 to 11A, 230 Victoria St, Singapore 188024, open 11am to 10pm daily — steps from the MRT, so nobody has to walk in the sun again.
What to order when you’ve got tired kids and no patience:
- Taiwan Popcorn Chicken — $6.90. Bite-sized, fried with basil leaves in the oil, and shareable, which is the whole point when three people want “a bit”. The basil is the Taiwanese move — it’s what makes 鹽酥雞 read as night-market rather than generic nuggets.
- Shake Shake Fries — $3.90. Kids shake the bag themselves. Buys you four minutes of quiet.
- Tofu Fries — $3.90 or Mini Hashbrown — $3.90. Both vegetarian, if that’s the table you’re feeding.
- Brown Sugar Milk Tea — $3.90 (M) / $4.90 (L). The one that goes with fried chicken.
- If someone wants the full thing: Original Chicken — $6.90, plain, so the marinade does the talking.
Everything we cook is no pork, no lard — we’ve done it that way since 2009. To be clear, we are not halal certified, so if certification is what you need, that’s a straight no from us rather than a maybe. But the no-pork, no-lard part is true across the whole menu, which makes a mixed group easier to feed.
We’ve been women-owned since 2009 — owner Phoebe Wang, co-run with Yadah — and the Bugis outlet is the one we point tourists to first, because it’s the easiest to find. On a public holiday it’s also the one that gets busiest around 6pm. Come at 5, not 6.
FAQ
Is Octoburst! 2026 really free? Yes. The Esplanade lists all Octoburst! events as free admission. Individual programmes may still have limited capacity, so arriving early helps.

How long does it take to get from the Esplanade to Bugis Junction? Walk to City Hall MRT — about 10–15 minutes, sheltered — then one stop on the East-West line to Bugis. Bugis Junction sits right on top of the station, and we’re on B1.
